Being like children comes to a person as naturally as eating when hungry, drinking water when thirsty. Children have the natural, innate knowledge that death is not the end, and so they do not fear it, do not fear animals, do not fear people. They feel trust towards all men. They do not care if these men are rich or poor, handsome or ugly, do not notice their wrinkles or age.

Harvard in those years was definitely the richer, more privileged institution; Radcliffe the poor relation. The boys’ accommodations in the Harvard houses were much nicer and more spacious than our shoe-box rooms in the Radcliffe dorms. We had to wait on tables and clean our own rooms; no work was required of the boys.

One of the two places where boys and girls could at least throw glances at each other was the cafeteria at mealtime. The student waiters were our messengers and helped us exchange notes. We respected them enormously for this favor they were doing for us. Sometimes we covered for them when they were sick. The other place where we met the girls was at choir practice. Needless to say, I was a member of the choir.
